AN ASSESSMENT OF TEACHERS’ DEMEANOR IN SELECTED PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

Educational institutions that are committed to serving students are often focused on the continuous improvement of the students’ experience. Therefore, this study assessed teachers’ demeanor in selected public secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. It adopted the survey method of an ex-post facto type. A sample of 392 (185 males and 207 females) senior secondary school students was used for this study. Self-developed instrument tagged “Teachers’ Demeanor Questionnaire” was employed to obtain responses from the participants. Analyses of data were done using descriptive analysis. Results revealed that being knowledgeable (66.8%), competent (66.3%), kind (66.3%), and respectful (66.3%) were top attributes expected of teachers by the students. This study concluded that the teacher-student relationship, communication, and teachers’ caring were on the average, indicating that teachers still performed their primary roles. It was recommended that teachers should be trained in students-centered caring skills, and that training should be extended to the entire organization.
