FACTORS INFLUENCING THE LEVEL OF BIOSECURITY PRACTICES AS SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN POULTRY EGG PRODUCTION IN SOUTHWESTERN, NIGERIA

Poor biosecurity and disease infections continue to be a major constraint to the poultry production system in Nigeria. This study was conducted among 343 poultry egg farmers to assess the level of biosecurity practices in Southwestern, Nigeria. The multi-stage sampling procedure was employed in data collection while descriptive statistics, fuzzy logic model, and multinomial logic model were used to analyze the data. The study revealed that the majority (68.5%) of the poultry egg farmers operated at a low level of biosecurity. The results revealed that the factors determining the level of biosecurity practices include access to livestock insurance, mortality rate, household size, and access tolivestock extension services. The study recommended that policy focus should be geared towards improvement in the service delivery by
the extension agency to include as priority information dissemination on biosecurity practices to the poultry farmers and encourage them to participate in a livestock insurance policy.
