SELECTED TEACHERS’ AND STUDENTS’ VARIABLES AS CORRELATES OF SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA

Mathematics is an important subject that must be passed at credit level by students before gaining admission into any tertiary institution in Nigeria. Despite the importance of Mathematics, the persistent high rate of students’ low performance is of great concern. This study therefore investigated selected teachers’ and students’ variables as correlates of senior school students’ performance in Mathematics.
A descriptive survey research design was employed. The population for the study was senior school students and their Mathematics teachers. Teachers’ variables questionnaire, students’ variable questionnaire and a Mathematics performance objective test were used to collect data. Data was analyzed using regression analysis statistical tool at 0.05 significant level. The findings of the study revealed that teachers’ qualification did not correlate with students’ performance in Mathematics while teachers’ and students’ attitudes correlates with students’ performance in Mathematics. Recommendations were made based on these findings. Key words: teachers, students, school, performance, mathematics
